ABOUT

I am Dr Anita Ramgutty (a.k.a Anita Ramgutty Wong), a professor, consultant and writer.

My journey as a writer and consultant is an unconventional one. From being crowned Miss Mauritius to earning a PhD in development management from Manchester University, I have enjoyed a fulfilling career as a full-time academic in Mauritius, and even spent my sabbatical year as a Fulbright Fellow at the Sloan School at MIT. I now publish fiction, critical essays, and continue to undertake academic research and to teach in freelance mode. When projects align with my vision and values, I undertake consultancy primarily in the field of policy.

Drawing on a deep interest in human stories, systems, transformation, and mysticism, I work at the intersection of policy and storytelling.

I have just now completed my debut fantasy fiction novel and started work on a book of essays.
MY VISION
I am committed to delving deep into diverse topics and presenting them in a compelling and insightful manner, inspired and grounded by Mauritian places and people, but still with universal resonance. Join me in a journey to explore intriguing stories, both fictional and real, and gain novel perspectives on various subjects ranging from national policy, societal trends and issues, food, nature, Mauritius history and culture, art and folklore!

THE FULL STORY
Hi there! I'm at a stage where I'm enjoying doing most of the full-time things I used to do when I was 'properly' employed, plus more! So, after a career in academia, I now thoroughly continue to enjoy, when it feels right, research, teaching and consulting, and have the sweet time for writing, walking, tending to my food forest, painting and enjoying family life with kids, grandkids, and pets. Today, I am fully and thoroughly committed to writing fiction novels as well as short stories written around Mauritian-inspired contexts and people. I simply am passionate about real, deep human stories, about the history of Mauritius and how national systems of politics and economy create significant impacts on the lives of individuals and entire societies. I thus work at the intersection of policy and storytelling, deeply committed to playing my part in bringing about a timeline of higher consciousness for all, as I a try to touch hearts and souls of my readers through my characters, their stories, their journeys.

There's stuff you might not know about me, like: Being the President of the Students' Union when I was at university, or being crowned Miss Mauritius in 1989. Today still, my heart warms as a stranger’s eyes light up in recognition, as they say, I remember your smile !
And, when I had no full-time job to turn to at the age of fifty, I became a farmer, struggling to coax vegetables from soil that had been abused from a hundred years of chemicals from the sugarcane plantations . That experience has been the best ever school of hard knocks and inspirations alike. So much so that today, my family and I have our very own fully-organic ‘food forest’ at home, and never lack of a healthy something or other to put on our plates!
Also… I have Irish roots! Yes, my mum Hilda Baker hails from Dublin, Ireland. I'm so proud of her, of her courage and eternal beauty, of her own exceptionally touching and adventurous life journey, and I'm delighted to have cousins who share my passion for ancestry and family history.
Out of print !! I wrote a book “Get Your Dissertation Right!” which was much loved by students before it went out of print. Today you can only find it in the reference section of the UoM library
